When for the first time a serious medical report came out in United States in 1964, many smokers have quit smoking. Yet survey reveals that nearly 440,000 people die every year in United States alone due to smoking habits. Illness that occurs due to such habits results in one out of every five deaths there.

Among the renal diseases, smoking greatly enhances the risks related to diseases like lung cancer, cardiovascular problems, chronic lung diseases, strokes and various types of cancers. It is also the most potent reason for the diseases based on respiratory problems in USA and across the globe. People therefore are realizing quite quickly about the necessity to quit smoking.

Moreover the smoking habits not only create problems for the smoker but also for others. For example, people near and dear to the smoker can suffer even more due to remaining constantly in smoky environment. They could develop the syndrome that is called the second hand smoke or passive smoke. Greatest sufferers are the children in the age group of 0-18 months. Second-hand smoke causes nearly 300,000 chronic bronchitis or pneumonia each year in United States alone.

These are not all. Second-hand smoke from the cigarettes used by parents can cause middle ear problem, coughing and wheezing in the children. Even worse; it could cause asthma and second-hand smoke is also one of the greatest reasons for the sudden infant death syndrome or SIDS in United States and across the world.

Even the child in the womb does not escape the evils of smoking and that makes it more essential to quit smoking. Smoking habits of pregnant women often leads to miscarriage, premature child birth, still birth, low birth weight in the children and infant death. More than 4,000 new babies die every year since their parents have smoking habits.

Passive smoking habits could result in renal diseases like cancer. Non-smokers residing with smokers have 24% higher risks of cancer, especially lung cancers in comparison to the non-smokers. Nearly 3,000 lung cancer deaths occur every year in United States due to lung cancer resulting due to passive smoking.

Last but not the least the smoking habits in parents also creates such habits in the children. When both parents smoke; the chances of the habit being inherited by the children is 200% than average.
